Dear colleagues, dear meeting participants
We are excited to welcome you in Zurich for the 42nd meeting of the European Paediatric Ophthalmological Society. After many years we will meet in Switzerland – a beautiful country in the very heart of Europe. The 8th and the 15th meetings of the then called European Paediatric Ophthalmology Group were both held in Geneva in 1980 and 1987, but Zurich never hosted an EPOS meeting before.
Even though Zurich with its 400’000 residents is the largest city in Switzerland, it is often affectionately referred to as the “Little Big City”. In Zurich you feel safe and cozy, while at the same time enjoying a fantastic metropolitan atmosphere that offers state of the art culture, science, technology and business life, combined with extremely efficient and reliable public transportation services. No wonder that Zurich repeatedly appears at the very top of city rankings for best quality of life worldwide.
Many pioneers of medicine have worked in Zurich over the years, among them famous paediatricians and ophthalmologists. Names such as Prader, Willi, Fanconi, Largo, Horner, Haab, Vogt or Amsler are probably familiar to most of you. Collaboration between the University Childrens’ Hospital and the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Zurich has a long and rich tradition. We are proud to present to you some highlights of this ongoing collaboration during our meeting.
Zurich welcomes guests from all over the world – one third of Zurich’s residents are not Swiss nationals and every year tourists from all over the world spend almost 3 million nights in Zurich’s hotels. During day- and nighttime there is a lot to explore in Zurich and its surroundings. You can choose between the famous Bahnhofstrasse for (window) shopping and drinking hot chocolate at Sprüngli’s, the old town with its picturesque narrow streets and bustling night life along the Limmat river, the Fraumünster Church with Chagall’s world-famous glas windows, the excellent art museum Kunsthaus with its marvelous collection of Giacometti’s works, the radiant Opera house at the shore of the lake of Zurich or a multitude of other spectacular activities and sites.
On Saturday night we will all enjoy dinner at the famous Zurich Zoo, another worthwhile attraction of the Little Big City. We hope that you will spend memorable days here with us, recharging your batteries with new knowledge, getting together with old friends and colleagues and meeting new ones, and discovering a spot in the center of Europe, to which you may return in the future.
Welcome to EPOS in Zurich!
